Choosing the best winter duvet you can afford will certainly help you sleep better and there’s plenty of choice, from pure down to hi-tech synthetics. There are two important criteria to be taken into account when choosing any duvet: you and the duvet. Afterall, everyone is unique, so how appropriate a duvet will be for you depends very much upon your own preferences.
How a duvet will feel depends on three important factors: Duvet Tog, Duvet Filling and Duvet Weight
Duvet Tog
Duvets are given a ‘TOG’ rating that relates to the amount of heat it can trap and, therefore, how much warmth it will provide. The duvet tog of choice for winter is generally the 13.5 tog. However a 10.5 tog may be more appropriate if you sleep with the heating on in your bedroom or prefer to sleep ‘cool’. 13.5 Tog Four Seasons duvets offer a flexible solution and usually consist of a 4.5 tog and a 9 tog duvet that clip together to provide a 13.5 tog duvet for winter.
Duvet Fillings
A duvet is only as good as its filling, so choose carefully. Natural fillings such as duck and goose feather, and down are seen as the luxury choice as they are soft, light and comfortable. These materials also “breathe” and absorb body moisture, releasing it in the morning when aired. Natural materials have a longer lifespan that their synthetic counterparts, and will last 20 to 30 years if cared for properly.
Synthetic Duvets Synthetic duvets are filled with polyester in a range of fibre types, including hollowfibre and microfibre. Synthetic duvets are a hypoallergenic, making them the obvious choice of duvet for those sensitive to feather and down duvets or those looking for a more cost-effective choice of duvet. The Spundown duvets are especially popular as you can launder even the 13.5 tog duvets at home on a hot 60 degree wash which will eradicate all dust mites.
Duvet Weight
Bearing in mind 13.5 tog winter duvets contain more filling than most other tog duvets you should consider whether you prefer:
Heavy Duvets If you prefer to feel a heavier weight of duvet with a natural filling in order to have a good night sleep, then we recommend you choose a duvet with a higher percentage of feathers, for example, 15% down and 85% feathers. Duck feather and down gives a heavier filling than goose feather and down, and is the cheapest of the natural fillings. Goose feather and down feels more voluminous and more expensive, with 100 per cent down being the most luxurious. Goose feathers are larger than duck feathers, so they can trap more air. This usually means that a goose down or feather duvet with a similar tog to a duck one will be lighter.
